When and how do I top my plant

first time grower, I have two plants. One given to me already topped. One grew by accident in the same pot as my lime tree. Guess we were smoking and dropped one in there? That one is long and lanky, just starting to bush out at the top. My question is when and how do I top this plant?

Hey @jlewis!

Welcome to Homegrown!

Can you post some pictures? What plants do you have?

I can when I get home.

Hi @jlewis! Welcome

This is what you want to do for topping

Thank you very much, can you clone the part you topped?

Yes!
You’ll want to top at the 4th or 5th node. Or wherever.
Then you’ll have 2 main colas.
Then if you top those two, you’ll have 4 mains

@Khatru i already topped blue dream and GDPs after 3 sets of true leaves. No going back and waiting now. Plants are looking good and all of them split perfectly. When should i be looking at topping the second time? Plants are 18 days old and look like if i toped again at next node it would be at about 21 days old. They are in 5 gallon buckets. I am planning on switching to flower at around 42 days.

@Jared - I’d let the adjacent growths get a few sets going on them before topping them.

You want your plants to be mature enough to handle the procedure :+1:
